Slots mechanics in plain English
Reels, paylines, RTP, volatility, and what actually happens when you press spin.
Online slots are digital versions of fruit machines. You choose a stake, press spin, and the game uses a random number generator (RNG) to decide the result. UK-licensed games are tested so outcomes are not “due” after a loss — each spin is independent.
Reels and paylines
Reels are the columns of symbols. Paylines are the patterns that must line up for a win (for example three matching symbols left to right). Some games pay “ways” instead of fixed lines — more ways usually means more ways to win, not a guaranteed better return.
RTP (return to player)
RTP is a long-run average, often around 94–96%. It does not mean you get 96% of a £10 session back. Over millions of spins the game pays out that share; in a short session you can win more or lose everything.
Volatility (variance)
Low volatility: smaller wins more often. High volatility: quieter stretches, then larger hits when they land. Megaways and many modern video slots sit toward the higher end.
Bonus rounds and free spins in-game
Feature rounds (free spins, pick bonuses) are part of the game math, not the same as a casino’s “no deposit free spins” promotion. Always check whether promo spins use a specific slot and stake.
